New iPods record in stereo!
Wow, this BIG! The new iPods record in stereo! Voice recording settings: Low (22.05 KHz, mono) High (44.1 KHz, stereo). At least that's what the spec page says. This is _great_ news for anyone who has wanted to use their iPod as a recorder, but didn't like the idea of installing Podzilla, or recording at the crippled rate the older iPods are set at. Link.

PEZ MP3 is on sale!
We've covered the PEZ MP3 story for many months, and today (iPod day it seems) comes news of Patrick's PEZ MP3 player! This may be stating the obvious, but this player has one feature that no other MP3 player can claim. It looks like a PEZ dispenser. In fact, it looks a lot like a PEZ dispenser. But, look a little closer and you will see where the headphones plug in, you will see a small play button. Pull on the toes and you will open up a battery door. I wanted the PEZ MP3 player to be as true to the PEZ dispenser as possible and still be an easy to use, inexpensive MP3 player. Link.

Video iPod
Rumors were correct, a video playing iPod is here. While you could do this with iPod Linux (see our HOW TO) - Apple will provide videos in iTunes for fee/free. I'm curious if people will be able to convert their DVDs through iTunes, Apple could just add the iTunes DRM on the files. But for now, I think we can look forward to a couple HOW TOs on getting the content you already own or have recorded on these new iPods when they come out. Link. Apple also released new iMacs with built in sight and a remote too.

HOW TO play video on iPods (with video)
There's a lot of speculation about future iPods, and if they'll play video - but you don't need to wait, the latest version of podzilla (Linux for the iPod) plays video, and now video with sound. Here's a quick HOW TO on installing podzilla and a video with sound playing on an iPod photo...

Video with sound on iPods with Linux
I finally got around to checking this out..."we're going to do something pretty bold... we're going to release the iPod Video." Finally, I got sound and video to work together on the iPod Photo (thanks to a new audio driver by Bernard). It should show up in CVS soon (within the next few hours). It'll be in the next nightly kernel+podzilla." [via] Link. HOW TO and downloads here. I'll post a video soon, so far it worked great.

100 song hack...
This will allow you to put more than 100 songs on the "iTunes phone" along with a couple other things ...hack for the new Motorola ROKR (merging several MP3s into one will let you store WAY more than 100 songs on the DRM enabled phone). However Chapterizer definitely IS useful for lots of other stuff... Link.

Cease and desist for NYC iPod Subway Maps
The site plans to get permission and/or make custom versions, but for now no more NYC maps for the iPod - the New York MTA has ordered me to remove the official maps from the site. I am hoping to acquire a license from their marketing department to offer the maps here. In the meantime, I hope you can all wait. Thanks. If worse comes to worse, I'll make up a custom set of maps and offer them here. . Link.

HOW TO Turn Your Old Laptop Into a Digital Video Recorder
Nice to see articles like this from the NYTimes...Many new multimedia notebooks include built-in television tuner cards and software that let them double as digital video recorders. But you don't have to buy a whole new laptop just to record your favorite shows... Not bad for $90. Link.

Portable Recording Alternatives...
Create Digital Music has a round up of some of the ways you can record audio with a portable device - my fav is still the iPod, running podzilla, but it's not always the best of course...while Nano is certainly deeply drool-worthy for listening, wouldn't it be great to have an iPod-like device for recording? Here are some of your options- Link.

Libraries offering audiobook downloads...
Here's another story about libraries offering audio files and digital files for their patrons, sounds good right? No- as usual, someone sold a DRM solution that doesn't really work. Each week I get emails from folks all over the USA trying to figure out ways to get the files on their "non-supported device".Link.

Good HOW TO for Mac and PSP 2.0 firmware owners who use iTunes. “Wouldn’t it be great if I could just delete some songs and and add new songs from my iTunes library, wherever I was using the WiFi internet connection?” It can be done, for a small cost (about $22 U.S.) Here's how- Link.

Low End Theory: Why Discmen Won't Die
Entertaining article on why most of us buy CD players...One of the great puzzles of gadgetry goes thusly: Why are portable CD players outselling digital audio players three-to-one? No, that’s not a misprint—for every American who bought an iPod or Dell Jukebox in 2004, three of their countrymen bought a descendant of the 21-year-old Discman... Link.

Disposable DV Cameras For Indymedia?
See our HOW TO...At $30 each these video cameras could be really useful for indymedia in latin america. The problem with expensive equiptment is that it centralized the means of production, you only have one camera, and when it's lost it's gone. But with $30 devices which record audio for interviews, video, and you can grab still's from you can do some amazing work. It's not so expensive that it'll get stollen quickly. We could get one of these in to the hands of many media activists instead of the one digital camera per imc which is not the standard in most imc's in countries with 'under developed' economies. MAKE pal John Maushammer sent us some great news! The CVS Disposable Camcorder (mentioned about a month ago) has now been usably hacked so that videos can be downloaded over USB - no need to desolder the flash memory. Finally, some healthy free-market competition to CVS's expensive development service, just like in the analog world. Here are the details!...

Make a Home made, open source mp3 Player
Home made, open source mp3 Player. The main goal of this project is to create an open design for a portable MP3 player, in both hardware and software. The secondary goal of this project is to make it as simple to construct, and as cheap, as possible. The design is based around the AVR Butterfly from Atmel. Photo and Link.
