Now THIS is an industrial design! This spotted child bicycle seat, on Riding on Roadways, is made from materials found at your favorite hardware store.
UPDATE: We’ve received a lot of comments about this post calling us out for safety concerns. To be clear, the original author of this post did not make this seat nor does he say you should make it for your child. We encourage discussions about the content shared here on the blog, but please remember to keep your comments relevant and kind to the discussion.

There are a few things in life worth NOT making and this is one of them. Used or new it doesn’t matter. This isn’t remotely safe enough to use for any child. There is no 3 point harness. CRAFT – you should remove this post before people seriously start thinking this is a good idea – PLEASE don’t make crafting your own DIY unsafe BABY seats a new trend.

  2. Yeah, that does not look safe to use in any way, shape or form. I second the request that this get removed.

  3. Totally agree with Liz. What’s next – carseats?

God forbid someone makes something themselves instead of buying it at Target. I don’t see how it’s any worse than a plastic bike seat you’d get there.

This has absolutely nothing to do with buying things from Target. Take a moment to look at baby seats meant for bicycles! They have a THREE POINT HARNESS that will SAVE a baby’s LIFE. This is a BABY we are talking about riding about in this heinous unsafe contraption. FYI – these new are $40, all that stuff to make that death trap? At least $25.
    Seriously CRAFT, take. It. Down.

  6. OMG! This is seriously scary!!!! You are opening yourselves to huge lawsuits if you allow this to remain on your website!!!!!!
DO NOT CRAFT THIS!!!!! Your child’s safety is worth more than saving a few bucks!!!!

  7. Unsafe. Unbelievable post. Shocked that someone would think otherwise.

  8. That does not look very safe at all. Definitely not worth my child’s safety. This should be removed.

  9. @melinda Do you serious not see the difference? Are you blind. This seat is not safe at all. The mounting system is terrible, the “harness” is terrible and it’s all sharp edges. Baby seats are made with molded seats that fit your child’s body, three or five point harness to keep the securely attached to the seat and a mounting system designed to hold the weight being put in them, not a make shift rack set up.
God forbid someone use their brain and think about whether or not their childs safety is at risk instead of blindly following “I must make everything DIY to be a cool hipster parent” culture. Buying safetly related items is not a frigging sell out move.

  10. sharp corners, legs dangling by moving spokes, bike rack with an estimated weight limit of about 25 lbs… top-notch parenting here.

  11. Um, ok, one word people keep using is “baby”. This isn’t for a baby. It’s for a kid. Yeah, more weight and all, but with body control and communication and things. Seems to have a seatbelt, so, yeah.
