When I was a kid, I used brown paper grocery bags to cover my school books. Before long, they were covered in doodles and stickers and rarely made it through the first semester of school. Fabric book covers were new to me when my kids started school. I see the appeal, but a lot of the ones in stores don’t fit my kids’ tastes. Now Teresa VanHatten-Granath of the Green Bag Lady shows how you can make your own custom covers at home.

My kids came home from the first day of school needing book covers. My first grader required a whopping 12 of them. I went to my local Walgreens, but they were $3.99/piece. Yikes! Instead of looking elsewhere I decided to try and make them from knit fabric. They turned out GREAT, work WELL and were so EASY to make! The best part is that they can be washed and reused from year to year. You can even make them from an old t-shirt!

Brilliant!

    These turned out really cute!
I’m a teacher and just wanted to post a word of warning. Fabric book covers that are too tight on the book can break the binding of the book.

Thanks for that great tip, Nancy! It’s a great point to keep in mind when creating the pattern for your book cover!
