Terrie points us to Knitters for Critters that is a special project in San Rafael, CA in response to the recent Cosco Busan oil spill cleanup in San Francisco Bay.
From the site:
Knitters for Critters is focusing this week on knitting the ornament pattern from the Holiday issue of Vogue Knitting – it’s essentially a knitted tube that can go over a Styrofoam ball. It would be better to make the smaller sizes, especially the two-inch size, given the cost of the Styrofoam balls.
Please bring your contribution by Friday, Nov 23rd, 12 noon to Marin Fiber Arts.
These ornaments will be sold this coming Friday from 4 – 8 pm at the Marin Fiber Arts booth at San Rafael’s annual Parade of Lights and Winter Wonderland in downtown San Rafael. Look for the Marin Fiber Arts booth!
For more information on how you can contribute to the project, visit Knitters for Critters. – Link.

Um, am I missing something here? The idea is to help raise money for an environmental disaster by making ornaments using a material that is in and of itself an environmental nightmare?!
Styrofoam is extremely difficult and costly to recycle, so it often ends up going right into landfills. It’s also the #2 material found in polluted marine areas.
I mean, come on!
Hi DigitalMaven,
That is a very valid point, which is why we are using as many “reused” balls as possible. I got all of mine from the school where I work, that were sitting in a closet and not going to be used.
We are also reusing plastic grocery bags to stuff the ornaments.
There is a new post on our website addressing the styrofoam issue. We have several more ideas.
