Age-old holiday tradition, 21st century execution: Johan von Konow recently came into posession of a broken laser cutter. With a lot of fussing, he was able to get it up and running again, and so he decided to use it to help with the annual gingerbread house build — a Swedish tradition. He and his wife built an accurate digital 3D model of their summer home, baked sheets of gingerbread as flat and even as possible, and then used the newly resurrected laser cutter to cut out all the wall and roof pieces. The result: a gingerbread house that is an exact replica of his summer home. Johan says:
The biggest problem with the cutting was the smell. Lasers tend to create a lot of smoke, and this one was worse than usual. It was something between burned cake and burned hair…
Needless to say, this gingerbread house is not edible!
