A massive installation consisting of 1.4 million feet of rope has just opened to the public in New York City’s Madison Square Park. The installation is called Red, Yellow and Blue and was created by Orly Genger, who collected nautical rope from various locations and then painted and hand-knotted it to make some impressive sculptural forms that change the whole landscape of the park.

The tradition of knitting carries the sharing of stories and the installation draws on that idea. The repurposed rope brings with it the stories of different locations and by knotting it, a space is created for the words and thoughts of viewers in New York City to complete the work, creating a silent dialogue that waves along.

How does a rather obscene amount of processed petroleum product (A.K.A. plastic!!!) (obviously nobody much uses hemp rope now a days)… present anything “meaningful”!!!!???? in an artistically creative manner!!!… other than the complete inanity of most top order ( western democratic nations) and their purile pursuits!!!.

Hi Mike, The rope used in the installation was collected and re-purposed, rather than purchased, from various locations on the Eastern Seaboard. So I think a big part of the artistic merit of the work is actually the way that it illustrates how much nautical rope (plastic) gets wasted because, if this rope were not in an installation in a public park, it would probably be installed in a landfill already.

The last time I saw that many exclamation marks it was in an email forward from my uncle saying the president was secretly a Muslim trying to take our guns and make our women wear burkas. Is that you uncle Bob?
