Knit Stop-Motion Commercial

By , 2010/03/23 @ 6:00 am

This amazing commercial for Natural Gas employs knitting, crochet and stop-motion filming. I love the idea of the knitting symbolizing the house warming up in the morning. Be sure to also watch the making of the commercial to see how they made the magic happen. [via @debroby]

Assisted-Knitting Purse with LilyPad Arduino

By , 2010/03/22 @ 4:00 pm

Knitting on the go, in pattern, can be tricky. How do you balance your pattern and your yarn and your needles while on the train, in the car, or in a waiting room? Kalani Craig for Knitty writes:

Yep, this bag knows everything. It knows your row number, the chart for your stitch pattern, and where you are in that stitch pattern. Unlike the other know-it-alls in your life, it will gladly share information with you by displaying your row number and a chart for the current row of your stitch pattern in lights! The 10 LED lights act as a row counter and a charted pattern. And more important: just about any knitter could pull this off.

Really. Any knitter with a thirst for adventure and a few projects under their belt can do this.

I agree with Kalani’s last statement there: E-textiles aren’t that hard, especially with the LilyPad Arduino around! Hey, I know a place to find some getting-started tutorials…

In the Kitchen with Jarod: Savory Fruit Chutney

Chutney-Opener.jpg
Continuing in this month’s upcycle tradition, Jarod Hermann shares his recipe for making savory chutney out of good fruit about to go bad.
Chutney is an Indian accompaniment for a main dish, consisting of fruit, sugar, acid, salt, and spices. There are many, many kinds of chutney, but we’re going to focus on turning sweet into savory with fruit chutneys. You can use almost any kind of fruit — whatever’s beginning to languish on your counter or in the fridge — tomatoes, pears, apples, mangoes, strawberries, and stone fruits (plums, peaches, apricots) are all good. You can even use vegetables, such as carrots or even onions. Chutneys are very simple to make, and pair well with a wide variety of meals.

Runner's "Not a Fanny Pack" Utility Belt

CRAFT: Future Craft Collective

When you embark upon your life as a runner, you swear you’ll never end up as one of those total geeks you see on the trail with their fanny packs slung oh-so-not-cool-ly on their hips, holding all their gear. But then you go out for your first big run and you realize, oh, I actually need to bring stuff with me: wallet, keys, runner’s goo. Do you have to let go of your hip style in order to run with the big dogs? We think not. Neither do you have to let go a big chunk of change as this little number inspired by Spibelt, cost just a buck 99.
Now I admit Kathie is the running geek in this Future Craft partnership. She has one full-on marathon under her runner’s belt and a whole lot of 13-milers as well. And let me tell you, she does not let go of one iota of her cool-stylin-self when she hits the streets. In fact, when she runs on by, I yell out, “looking good Kathie!!!” And she just smiles and waves, patting her goo pack, knowing that all she needs is tucked right there in her rocking tech-tee utility belt.

How To: Converse Birthday Cake

Alice Currah of The Savory Sweet Life created the most amazingly realistic Converse cakes for her nephew’s first birthday. The two little edible shoes are pretty much the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Alice’s post includes great shots of her process and she goes into detail not only about her construction method, but also explains how she found her inspiration. She is a dedicated blogger, and I recommend adding her to your RSS right now! [via tastespotting]

NYC Beekeeping Ban Lifted

By , 2010/03/22 @ 9:00 am

PT @ Make: Online points us to this NY Times article about allowing NYC beekeeping!

New York City is among the few jurisdictions in the country that deem beekeeping illegal, lumping the honeybee together with hyenas, tarantulas, cobras, dingoes and other animals considered too dangerous or venomous for city life. But the honeybee’s bad rap — and the days of urban beekeepers being outlaws — may soon be over.
