This amazing artwork from Evelin Kasikov combines my very favorite media: printing, typography, hand embroidery and book binding.

Printed Matter is a project about craft within the context of graphic design. It brings together digital and hand made, aiming to challenge the idea what a printed page can be. It is a book design project where book is seen as a tactile, three-dimensional experience as well as a reading and viewing experience. Important part of the project is my specially developed technique – hand embroidery based on the analysis of optical mixture and colour printing processes. The content of these books evolves around seeing as an active process and takes inspiration from the complexity of experiencing visual messages.

Her piece also includes several printed and embroidered posters, such as these that were based on Gill Sans Light. It’s amazing how she’s used embroidery to impart these elements of graphic design.

A set of hand embroidered posters based on Gill Sans Light. First poster shows the combinations of four CMYK colours. Second poster shows the increasing resolution through letterforms stitched with Cyan and Yellow thread. Green colour becomes visible from a distance as the blending of colours takes place in the eyes of the viewer. In the third poster a single large scale letterform is hand stitched using conventional screen angles and the equal blend of four CMYK colours.
