Crown Tools Marking Gauge, Crown Hand Tools, $46.99

Used to score wood in a straight line parallel to the wood’s edge, this marking gauge is useful for chisel and sawing applications. I found it particularly helpful when learning the tricky skill of making handcut dovetails. Made of rosewood and brass, the craftsmanship in this tool is impeccable and almost heirloom quality.

  1. $575?! Please tell me this is a typo.

Sorry to nit-pick, but the image for the marking gauge is incorrect. What is depicted is mortise gauge, if you notice the twin points for marking the longer edges of a mortise, which are adjustable to mark different mortise widths, a marking gauge only has one point.

    • Interesting, because the Woodcraft link I posted lists has that picture in the listing for a marking gauge. I never knew there was a difference. In any case, the pins on this tool are removable, so it can be used to score just one line if you wish.
