News From The Future: Your Amazon Purchases In a 7-11 Locker… John Cook @ Geekwire writes –

What are these lockers — which stand about 7-feet tall and take up a sizable chunk of the north wall — all about? One of the clerks explained that they would allow Amazon customers to pick up packages at the 7-Eleven.

When asked if they had more information about getting one of the lockers, the clerk suggested I contact Amazon. He then said that they plan to activate the lockers on Friday.

From I recall when I was in Japan, this is how a lot of packages are delivered / stored. When the post service goes bust in the USA soon, this will be the next “PO” box.

I’m in Denmark right now and the post office has something similar. A wall of lockers that you can use to send and receive packages (24/7 I believe) you only have to scan the notification and the locker opens. Very cool :)

Same here in Germany. Offered by DHL. Used to be a registration only service but now i think everybody may use it. Also you can send your packages through it. You select the fee, pay it via electronic-cash card, the stamp is then prindet and after you put it on the package you can put in in one of the different sized compartments and it will be picked up by a DHL guy the next day.
Just perfect for people who are usualy not at home, when the delivery guy comes around.

Also Poland, from 2008 company called InPost is using such tech to delivery parcels. When you recive your parcel, you also recive email/sms info with locker number.

Interesting. However my 7-11 does not have them. However I don’t expect the PO in this country to die before the end of the century.

We’ve had this in Norway for a few years now. To clarify, you don’t get “your own box”, like the old system where you rent a “postbox” at the post office.
This is not meant for general mail. This is a package delivery system only, and you get the one-time-use code to the box that has your package in it.
