"readily available"?
Sodium Hydroxide now has to be ordered from specialty dealers because stores no longer carry it in this country because "it's used to make Meth". I'm not certain, but I suspect dealers are required to keep track of who's buying it, much like stores are required to record the ID of anyone who buys a decongestant that actually works (because "it's used to make meth"...)
Better stock up on water now, before they figure out meth labs use water, too.

One of the Foxfire series of books also a good description of how to make soap. Something about wood ashes in a burned out hickory stump. Very low tech but interesting.

Isn't sodium hydroxide lye? That should be readily available in as a drain cleaner - Red Devil comes to mind
